Trezor Safe 5

Black Seed Ink Research Labs pick:
The Trezor is the best cold wallet for multi-layered security. If the device is stolen the thief needs the pin code and passphrase to access wallet. If the seed phrase is stolen, the thief needs the passphrase. However, you will need to constantly updated the app and the device so if you're active in investing the Trezor Safe 5 is excellent. There is a slight learning curve for alt coins, but if you understand that you should be sending ERC20, Solana tokens within the applicable network and do tiny transactions FIRST, you'll quickly get the hang of it.

What we like:
1. Secure element certified to EAL6+

2. Easily store XRP, XLM, SOL, ETH, BTC, and ERC20 tokens, Solana tokens.

3. Adding a passphrase is easy for an extra layer of protection.

4. Skip the exchange and easily buy, sell, swap within the app. (not recommended)

5. Customer support is solid.

6. Setup of seed phrase is disconnected from the internet. Very important!

7. Best for last - It's open source!

8. Almost forgot... For extra wallet security you can add an micro SSD. Store it separate. Thief needs device and SSD and passcode (i.e. Fort Knox)

What we don't like:
1. It's not air-gapped. Make a Safe 5 with a camera and we do the Happy Dance.

2. The UI is not as bountiful as other hardware wallet apps like Tangem and D'Cent, but it's getting better.

3. You can't create a wallet for coins without first having the token (Example: You need an ETH wallet before you can store XCN, Quant, Velo). This can be confusing for newbies.

keystone 3 Pro

Black Seed Ink Research Labs pick:

Keystone 3 Pro is one of the strongest options for people who care most about air-gapped signing and open-source transparency. Its official native app is called Keystone Nexus, and one of its most underrated features is that the device can manage up to three separate seed phrases at once, effectively giving you three distinct wallets inside one device. That is a real advantage for people who want to separate long-term holdings, active funds, or different strategies without buying multiple signers. The hardware is serious. The weak spot is still the native app experience, which needs more polish to match the strength of the device.

What we like

  • Air-gapped — QR signing keeps it off common connection paths.
  • Open source — more transparent and easier to verify.
  • Three seed wallets — supports up to three separate seed phrases.
  • Fingerprint signing — faster and more discreet in public.
  • Large touchscreen — easier to review what you are signing.
  • Third-party support — works with more than just its own app. But...

What we don’t like

  • Nexus needs work — the native app still feels behind the hardware.
  • Too much third-party reliance — power users may end up elsewhere.
  • Not fully polished — especially for altcoin-heavy users.

Does Keystone 3 Pro support multiple addresses for the same asset?

Yes, but it's complicated and viewing is not supported by the native app. This was tested using XRP.

SafePal S1 and S1 Pro

Black Seed Ink Research Labs Pick: SafePal S1 or S1 Pro

SafePal has been around since 2018, which matters in Cryptoland. The company began in Binance Labs’ incubator in San Francisco. The particular hardware wallet we like is the SafePal S1 Pro.

It is an air-gapped hardware wallet designed to keep signing keys offline by using QR (Quick Response) code scanning for transactions instead of data connections. It pairs with the SafePal companion app across multiple platforms to manage Bitcoin and a large number of altcoins and tokens, including Solana, XRP, and Ethereum.

It also supports passphrase-protected hidden wallets for advanced compartmentalization. Your recovery mnemonic, or seed phrase, is meant to remain fully in your control. SafePal states that it does not store or access it. That means setup and recovery depend on you backing it up securely offline.

It is not our top recommendation for a complete newbie.

Note: The main differences between the S1 and S1 Pro are the upgraded casing, camera, and camera position.

What we like:

  • Air-gapped QR signing
  • Beginner-friendly setup and everyday use
  • Very broad asset support
  • Passphrase support for hidden wallets
  • Secure-element chip with anti-tamper protections
  • SafePal says it does not store or access your seed phrase
  • Native app allows the viewing of so many alt coins, it's like Christmas!

What we don’t like:

  • You still rely on the companion app for day-to-day management
  • You need to trust and verify the app flow
  • QR workflows are slower than USB or Bluetooth wallets
  • It needs a keyboard. The 5 input keys are as frustrating as using the on-screen keyboard for searching your streaming service!

Safety first

Your seed phrase is the master key to your assets. Never store it in email, screenshots, or cloud notes. Use a durable offline backup such as a metal plate. Always keep backups in separate secure locations.
